Planning a fireworks show

The vertical layers, the opener, the body, the finale, how long each block runs, and how many pieces fire per minute. The diagrams are drawn to show the idea, not to scale, and this is one way to build a show, not the only way.

The vertical layers of a show

A show reads better when something is happening at more than one height at once. One common way to build one is as stacked layers by product type and by how high each one flies, from ground-level fountains up through the biggest shells, each occupying its own rough band so nothing crowds the same slice of sky.

Do this
  • Keep something firing in the ground and low layers even while a shell is mid-flight in the top layer, so the sky is never empty while something big is climbing.
  • Stagger the layers so there is somewhere for the eye to go at every height, not only straight up.
  • Reserve the top layer for the biggest, most attention-holding pieces, and let the mid and low layers carry the connective tissue between them.
Skip this
  • Firing everything from one layer at a time and leaving the rest of the sky dark in between.
  • Loading the top layer so heavily that the lower layers run out of product before the show ends.

The opener

The opener's whole job is to grab attention immediately, before anyone has settled in. It runs loud, dense, and short, then hands straight off to the body.

Do this
  • Open with something large enough to be unmistakable in the first few seconds, not a slow build from small pieces.
  • A rising salvo works well as a lead-in: fire one shell, then two, then three, building the count each round up to the top of the show. It reads as a literal countdown to a crowd.
  • Keep it short. The opener's job is to announce the show, not to be the show.
Skip this
  • Starting with your smallest or quietest product; it reads as the show still warming up rather than starting.
  • Opening at the same pace you plan to hold for the rest of the show. The opener should feel like a jump, not the first beat of a steady rhythm.
NoteSome shows run a slow cadence of ground-level pieces for up to an hour before the opener, spaced several minutes apart, simply to hold a gathering crowd's attention while people are arriving. That is not the opener; it ends before the opener begins.

The body

The body is the bulk of the show, by both time and product, built from continuous rotations rather than one-off pieces, so something is always active while the next piece takes over.

Do this
  • Run repeater cakes back to back: light the next one shortly before, or just as, the current one finishes, so there is no silent gap while pieces are swapped.
  • Rotate between two or more products firing on the same rough cadence at the top layer, alternating between them so the same shell type does not repeat back to back.
  • Let the ground and low layers run continuously underneath the whole body, so there is a constant base of light and color under the rotating cakes and shells above.
Skip this
  • Firing every piece you own back to back at full intensity; save some density for the finale.
  • Long silent gaps while reloading. Plan the rotation so the next piece is ready before the current one ends.

The finale

The finale is the compressed final burst: everything held in reserve, fired together in a short, dense window that reads as a clear ending rather than the show simply stopping.

Do this
  • Hold back a portion of product specifically for the finale rather than spending everything during the body.
  • Load finale racks progressively during the body, so by the time the body ends the racks are already full and ready to fire together.
  • Compress the finale into a short window. Density, not length, is what makes an ending read as an ending.
Skip this
  • Building the finale from whatever happens to be left over; plan what goes into it from the start.
  • Stretching the finale out. A long, thin finale reads as more body, not an ending.

Timing a show

Consumer shows commonly run somewhere between about fifteen and thirty minutes. The runtime is really the sum of three blocks, opener, body, and finale, plus however long an optional slow cadence runs beforehand while a crowd gathers.

Do this
  • Add the blocks up before buying product: pre-show cadence, opener, body, finale. Each one has a real time cost.
  • Let the body take up most of the runtime. The opener and finale are both meant to be short by comparison.
  • Match the runtime to the site and the crowd. A longer show needs more setback, more product, and a longer window before anyone loses interest.
Skip this
  • Padding the body just to hit a target length. A show that runs long because the firing is thin and spaced out reads as slower, not bigger.

How many pieces fire per minute is what actually controls how full a show feels, more than the total product bought. A show can carry a large budget and still feel sparse if the pacing is off.

Do this
  • Think in shots per minute, not total shots. A steady four-to-six-second interval at the top layer alone already reads as a full cadence before anything else is added.
  • Build density on top of a steady base rather than firing everything in a burst and then going quiet.
  • Let the finale be the one place the per-minute rate spikes. That is what makes it read as a finale rather than more of the body.
Skip this
  • Judging a show by total shot count alone. Two shows with the same total can feel completely different depending on how that count is spread across the runtime.

A worked fifteen minute example

This is one real fifteen minute show, generalized: the product categories, the cadence, and the approximate shot counts are drawn from one of our own show plans, with the specific brand names and prices left out. It is built the way the sections above describe: a rising opener, a body that rotates through the mid and top layers while the ground layer runs continuously underneath, and a finale built from shells set aside during the body.

All told, a show built this way commonly adds up to several thousand individual shots once the continuous ground layer is counted, even though only a few dozen pieces are actually being lit by hand. Most of that count comes from pearls and missile batteries, each of which can throw hundreds of individual sparks from a single piece.

NoteThis example assumes a site with enough setback for the largest shells in it, and enough hands to keep the rotation and the finale racks loaded on time. Both are worth planning before the product is bought.
